Musical Vaults of Belgrade

A Weill Ago

Concert-play

On Friday, March 16, 2018, at 19:00, in the beautiful ambiance of the Residence of Princess Ljubica, the Cultural Element and the Belgrade City Museum presented to the audience young Serbian artists gathered around the inspiring project "A Weill Ago". This unique event was realized as part of the popular concert season "Musical Vaults of Belgrade".

The complete program for soprano, piano, and electronics was deeply inspired by the personality, work, and music of Kurt Weill. Through sung, spoken, recorded, and sampled excerpts, Weill's songs are layered and refracted with the voices of Lotte Lenya, Bertolt Brecht, Danilo Kiš, creating a rich sonic tapestry that blends the sounds of childhood, wartime turmoil, archival recordings, and personal histories.

"Together, these sound layers form a cabaret bittersweet narrative about art, transience, and responsibility."

The electroacoustic layer, brilliantly constructed by composer Ana Gnjatović, contextualizes and comments on Weill's songs. This audio-visual landscape perfectly merged with the performance of soprano Tijana Đuričić, whose interpretation with the emotional piano accompaniment of Milivoje Veljić left a strong impression on everyone present.
