Karantin u dvoje

Quarantine for Two — a comedy with a serious intent

Partner programme. “Karantin u dvoje” is not a Kulturni element production but a play by the Belgrade Youth Theatre. We offer it as part of our touring programme as producers: we agree dates, terms and technical requirements with hosts and organise the company’s visit.

Belgrade, 2020. Curfew, masks, disinfectant and two complete strangers in the same flat. Milena, a first-year acting student from Banja Luka, full of energy, noise and life, and Konstantin, an introverted doctoral student of world literature who loves order, silence and rules, become flatmates by chance, just as the world stops. Locked between four walls with no way out, they are forced to look at, listen to and put up with each other.

“Karantin u dvoje” is a comedy of collisions: of characters, habits, generations and outlooks on life. Through a series of witty, fast and often absurd situations, it speaks about boredom, loneliness, isolation and the personal tragedies that surface once there is no outside world left to hide them.

“The humour in this play is not an escape from reality but a way to survive it. The laughter comes from recognition, from truth, from those small situations we have all been in.” — from the director’s note

Laughter is the weapon here, and through comedy the play asks serious questions: how alone are we, what do we do when we are left without our roles, and can we find closeness where we never looked for it. With Bojana Štrbac and Ilija Blagojević, produced by the Belgrade Youth Theatre and Medusa Production.

From irritation to friendship, from chaos to understanding: even in the worst of times something good can be born. Sometimes funny. Sometimes painful. Sometimes unexpectedly beautiful.
