Partner programme. “Trg ratnika” is not a Kulturni element production. We offer it as part of our touring programme as producers: we agree dates, terms and technical requirements with hosts and organise the company’s visit.
“Trg ratnika” is an original project by young actors Teodora Gačić and Svetozar Babić, based on “Warrior Square” by British playwright Nick Wood. The duodrama speaks about the scars war leaves on children’s souls, about families falling apart in wartime, and about exile and the suffering it brings to everyone, and above all to children.
Directly or indirectly, in recent decades and still today, we have all been participants in or witnesses to wars. All of us. Even those who look at the world with innocent eyes and a pure heart. Children are not spared either.
Nick Wood offers a precise portrait of the victims. Their suffering is a “process”, not just an unfortunate and passing moment. The playwright also considers how, after the horrors of war, refugees can find their place in a new environment and adapt to a community in which refugee status brings a sense of marginalisation, and the long, painful process of overcoming the trauma of war.
This is shown with authentic stage expression by young actors Teodora Gačić and Svetozar Babić, who besides the two leads also play several adult characters seen through children’s eyes, while the music composed by Branko Trijić masterfully completes the atmosphere of the whole story. The preview took place on 24 May 2023 at the Čelinac Cultural Centre and the premiere on 17 July 2023 at Teatrijum. The play has since been performed in Serbia, in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Berlin.
Life, despite everything, clings to survival and finds its way — and the sister and brother at the heart of the play fight relentlessly for their place under the sun.
