On Saturday, December 23, 2017, in the intimate and historical space of the Residence of Princess Ljubica, Professor Dr. Srđan Teparić and pianist Dina Čubrilović prepared an inspiring concert-lecture on salon music in the life of Serbian citizens.
This project was realized in cooperation between the Cultural Element and the Belgrade City Museum, within the Musical Vaults of Belgrade, and as an accompanying program to the current exhibition dedicated to Anastas Jovanović. Anastas Jovanović, as an academically trained artist, excellent lithographer, and talented photographer, immortalized all prominent personalities of his time during the second half of the 19th century, designed the first state multi-media ceremonies, and participated in building the modern image of the Principality of Serbia.
Serbian piano music, formed according to Western models, was an important part of that comprehensive cultural transformation. The lecture specifically highlighted "salon music" – a phrase that implies not only a type of music but a specific musical practice that only disappeared from the historical stage in the mid-20th century. The audience was able to discover who the pioneers of the development of art music were and how it developed at the Obrenović court at this unique event.
