Musical Vaults of Belgrade

Winter Journey

Concert-play

In cooperation with the Belgrade City Museum, and within the second concert season "Musical Vaults of Belgrade", a concert entitled "Winter Journey" was held on March 26, 2017, in the crowded Residence of Princess Ljubica. This event represented a special artistic happening - a specific train journey through Franz Schubert's famous song cycle of the same name.

The audience had the opportunity to experience the integral performance of this series of 24 songs, composed to the verses of Wilhelm Müller. The program was performed by exceptional guests from Germany: the internationally renowned baritone Julian Orlishausen and our celebrated pianist with a Cologne address, Boris Radulović. The specificity of the performance was also reflected in the dramatic element - at the very beginning, the conductor checked the tickets of the passengers (the audience), after which the guests symbolically embarked on an interactive journey through snowy and icy landscapes projected from the sides of the train car where the passengers/spectators sat.

"A lonely hero who, after an unfulfilled love, wanders through icy landscapes, returning to the past to better understand the present."

The cycle "Winter Journey" is rarely heard on concert stages in its integral form, as it represents a huge challenge for performers. The duration of about 70 minutes requires exceptional concentration and dramatic intensity that resembles large stage works. Through the synergy of top-notch music-making and the historical ambiance under the vaults of the Residence, the Cultural Element once again merged architecture, history, and top-tier art.
