Exhibition Closing

The Stukas Flew in at Dawn

Performance

On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at the Residence of Princess Ljubica in Belgrade, the Cultural Element ceremoniously closed the exhibition "Belgrade Fairground – Return to the Future" with a performance entitled "The Stukas Flew in at Dawn...". This event was realized in collaboration with the Belgrade City Museum and the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade.

Through a performance that represented a strong and striking combination of music and dance, and which directly corresponded to the exhibition itself, the Cultural Element aimed to depict the massive war machinery that loomed over Belgrade and left permanent and indelible consequences on the city and its inhabitants.

"The performance was conceived with the deep belief that the victims and all tragically interrupted destinies must never be forgotten, and the story of the Fairground and destroyed hope must be told again."

The central part of the musical program consisted of a performance of an extremely demanding work by the famous American minimalist Steve Reich - "Piano phase". At the pianos were pianists Ana Spremić and Dina Čubrilović, who created a sense of inexorable mechanics with repetitive and hypnotic rhythms. Alongside them, dancers Jovana Stojić, Nikola Kalović, and Georgije Grbić evoked an atmosphere of unrest, chaos, and mechanical rhythm with their movements. The visual impression and scenography were completed by a large airplane model specially made for this occasion by the art studio "Artestre".
